This Christmas card has a snow globe that actually has moving snow in it! (see a video in action: http://youtu.be/D0gLZU-bZyg). The snow globe is made with sugar in it and has a “window” through to the middle of the card so whatever you put on the inside of the card shows through the snow globe! This is a huge hit with kids as well because they want to play with it all the time (and honestly I’ve seen adults playing with it a lot too!). Sending this as your Christmas card shows you spent time and love to wish your friends and family the best holiday wishes.
You Will Need...
- foam tape
- double-sided tape
- transparencies/clear plastic
- Cricut/paper cutter (optional)
Step by Step Instructions
The card itself is just cutting into shape and cutting a circle in the front to view through the snow globe. Therefore, these steps focus on making the snow globe specifically.
Cut out snow globe. Two layers is ideal to help make the thin circle edges sturdier. I cut the background layer thicker and the top layer in a coordinating paper color that was a bit smaller, so it showed the background color. Attach the two layers together with double-sided tape.
Cut out plastic circles (I used transparencies) that are big enough to cover the hole of the snow globe and overlap with the paper so you have enough room to attach the circles to the globe. Do not let them stick out beyond the entire snow globe. If you have a little overlap outside the globe, don’t worry…you won’t be able to see it once you put the card together, but aim for keeping the circle behind the paper of the snow globe.
Take a piece of foam tape approximately 2-ish inches long and cut it into fourths to make it skinny (so in half lengthwise then each of those in half again). Be sure you leave the backing on the one side for now. You may prefer more than 2 inches at a time or less, you’ll get a feel for this.
Carefully remove the paper backing from the foam tape (if you do it before pouring in the sugar, you’ll get sugar on your tape and it won’t stick very well)!
Then you can decorate the inside of the card as you desire and choose what people see through the globe! Any animal or cute house will do. People are amazed at the snow globe part you will be a total rock star! FYI I mailed these to all different states and they held up perfectly. Just be sure that you check that the weight isn’t too much for one stamp. Also, I made them square, but square envelopes cost more to send so I used a 6×9 envelope which is regular postage provided the weight is okay.
