Cupcakes may be trendy and oh-so-cute when decorated with frosting, candies and colored sugar. But they aren’t real snacks I’d give my kids. I save those for birthdays and special occasions. But I still love an adorable and fun lunch food activity!
Today, instead of lunch the kids and I made circus clowns from fruit!
Circus Clown Fruit
It all started because of a trip to the apple orchard. We brought home 3 bushels of apples to make applesauce and pies. We also bought a peeler, slicer, corer machine-thingie. If you do not have one of these, you are missing out on some real fun! All you do is poke the apple on, turn the crank and voila–your apple is cored, peeled and spiral sliced. SUPER cool!
As we were preparing our three bushels of apples for applesauce, I got inspired by the long curly strands of peels! They looked like big curls of red and green! Kinda exactly like clown hair!
How To Make
So, we pulled out all the rest of the healthy food in our kitchen–grapes, raisins, cheese, crackers, bananas, popcorn and some not-so-healthy stuff like maraschino cherries and chocolate chips.
I put them all in a muffin tin because it’s portion control and makes for less mess as the kids aren’t reaching their sticky hands into bags and bowls!
I thinly sliced the apples to be our clown faces. We added the curly apple peel hair. Then we had at it with the rest of our food! The kids were waay more creative than I was. But I’ll let you see my three creations anyway (yeah, that one on the bottom is a bear…*shrugs*…bears are in the circus, right?):
There was not one empty plate and not one picky-eater at the table! One of the most exciting lunches we’ve ever had!
