You Will Need...
- buttons
- 20 gauge wire
- flat nose pliers
- round nose pliers (not pictured)
- nylon jaw pliers (optional)
- bail making pliers (optional)
- Sharpie Marker
- small rubber hammer (ot pictured)
Step by Step Instructions
Step 1
Cut 2 pieces of wire, 3 inches long. On 1 end of each wire, mark it at 1 inch.
Step 2
With the round nose pliers, fold each wire into a “U” shape, and insert into button.
Step 3
Flatten out the wires, as shown. If you find that the wires are uneven, now would be the time to trim them.
Step 4
On the short end of the wires, begin to curl them with the round nose pliers. Just curl them until they are about even with the button. To curl the wire in the opposite direction, just turn the button over!
Step 5
With the flat nose pliers, fold the curl up and over the front of the button. You can also do this with just your hands, if you find that’s easier for you.
Step 6
If your long wires have gotten crooked, straighten them with the nylon jaw pliers, or just pull the wires through your fingers to straighten them. To make the ear wire, grasp the wire with the bail making pliers and fold it backward, until it almost touches the button. If you don’t have bail making pliers, no problem! Use the Sharpie and fold the wires over the marker.
Step 7
Bend the tips of the ear wires up a little. I use the width of my flat nose pliers as a measure. Adjust the width of your earwire openings, if necessary. If you have a small rubber hammer, gently hammer the curve of the ear wires. You can do this by hanging the button off of your work surface, so your wire is flat to the surface, and hold the end of the wire as you hammer. And you are done!
