How to DIY Shoe Box Charging Station for Your Devices

Do you have lots of gadgets and electronic toys, but hate wires and chargers ?

Yeah, me too. I’m the regular technophile and need my electronics but my charger corner of the room was this unmanageable pit of cables and adapters and I just ignored it in desperation for the most part of my time.

NO LONGER ! I discovered this DIY charging station a while ago, but a few weeks ago I decided I had enough of messy wires and chargers and made one by myself.

This shoe box charging station is the perfect way to charge your electronics, while keeping the cables organized and hidden behind a cutely designed box.

This tutorial is going to describe you exactly how I made it and what you need to make one as well.
The most basic of models can be made for as little as 10 minutes (without decoration), while the deluxe designs can take you weeks to complete.

You Will Need...

Shoe Box
Power Coupler
(obviously chargers)
Scissors, Razor, Glue, Pencil and Ruler
Hole frames or washers
Decoration materials (e.g. wrapping paper)

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1

Design and Decor First

The functionality of the box is made within 10 minutes. What is really the time consuming part is decorating the box to your likings.
You CAN skip it, but if you do, you’ll just end up with an ugly box with holes and cables sticking from it.
Not really the improvement you’re looking for.

In my case, I used wrapping paper to dress the exterior of the box. You can choose whatever paper you want, but I really suggest a simpler pattern, so you can easily line it up and make it look continuous and seamless.

For my example, I put the box front side down on the paper and trace the walls with a very very light stroke on the pencil.
On all sides, but the back I marked a two inch margin and then, using the ruler, I made thicker exterior lines.
I did that for the bottom and back side as well, while continuing the margins on the sides, and making on on the farthest back edge.
Then I rested the box bottom down on the respective place where I traced the bottom, and did the same for the sides.

In the end, you should have a cross shaped stencil on the wrapping paper.
Cut out and carefully wrap around the box to see it it fits and if the pattern aligns. You might need to adjust the margins, so a bit of a try and error.

When you start gluing, the margins should form overlapping flaps to help your task and form continuity over the edges.
Step 2

When you’re done with decorating the box, take your ruler and mark the spots for the holes. Space them out properly. Then take your decorative frames, rings or washers and while holding them in their final place. Trace the inside on the box. Cut away the holes and glue the washers in place. Make a whatever hole in the back for the coupler’s socket plug. It doesn’t need to be pretty.
Step 3

Assemble the box. Put the coupler in box and plug all your chargers in a organized manner, while pulling each plug outside it’s respective hole.
Label each charger over it’s hole and close the box.
Your diy charging station is ready.
