I saw this large 22″ toy horse at the thrift shop and instantly fell in love with it. I just had to get it and do something with it. The mane and tail were typically matted. Red nail polish and other stains decorated it. So painting it was necessary.
I lathered the mane and tail with plaster of paris. Then, ran the substance completely through the matted synthetic hairs, squeezing and reapplying it. I continued the process until I formed the base where I wanted the mane and tail to flow onto the body. Then coated the plaster with outdoor caulk. When the caulk was thoroughly dry, I base painted with two very light coats and a final coat of a rubbed oil bronze paint.
