How to Clean These 7 Things That Everyone Forgets to Clean

When someone tells you they’ve been cleaning what are the first things that come to your mind? Maybe vacuuming, dusting, doing the dishes, etc. Well chances are the same things came to their mind as well. But what about cleaning the vacuum or the garbage disposal or even the kitchen sponges? Bet you didn’t think of that. Here are a few of the things that no one thinks to clean.

Difficulty:
Estimated Time:
  • Step 1

Remote controls - One thing that gets touched by all family members all day long is the remote control, yet it doesn't get cleaned very often. And the process will just take a few minutes. Simply brush away any debris that might have gotten between the buttons and after that clean it with a mixture of water and rubbing alcohol. It's as easy as that.
  • Step 2

Lamp shades - When thinking of cleaning, lamp shades aren't high on the list. But just because we can't see all the dust from down here, doesn't mean we shouldn't clean them. Get a ladder and a wet cloth and wipe them down. A job that takes less than 5 minutes, yet most people never think to do it.
  • Step 3

Garbage disposal - As the name suggest this appliance is full of garbage. Although it collects the garbage it is possible for traces of food waste to remain, causing your sink to smell. An easy and fast way, to clean it is to mix ½ cup of baking soda with a cup of white vinegar. Pour it in, let it sit for about 10 minutes, rinse it with hot water and you are done.
  • Step 4

Kitchen sponges - An item used daily in the kitchen and a few times at that. Usually they don't have the time to dry out between uses and that moisture can help harmful bacteria grow and multiply. Some simple ways to sanitize a sponge involve using a microwave or a dishwasher. If you opt for the microwave just wet the sponge and put it in for a minute. Just keep in mind that sponges with a metallic scrub pad shouldn't be put in the microwave. If you decide to use the dishwasher just put it on the hottest and longest cycle and don't forget to use the dry cycle as well. If this sounds like too much work just change your sponges regularly and you'll be good.
  • Step 5

Mattress - Yet another thing we use everyday but almost never clean. Mattresses can contain a number of dirty things, such as blood, sweat and other bodily fluids. As well as dust mites and even mould. There are a few way you can clean your mattress. But the easiest seems to be vacuuming. A lot of newer vacuums have a special nozzle designed just for that. Just make sure you do both sides.
  • Step 6

Vacuum cleaner - This is a machine that spends all it's life cleaning, well maybe someone should clean it too. Most vacuum cleaners are easily taken apart, which makes cleaning them fairly easy. Remove and clean the container, the filter and anything else you can take out. As for the parts that can't be taken out – steam carpet cleaning advises you to simply use a damp microfiber cloth. Let everything dry before putting it back together.
  • Step 7

Humidifier - Humidifiers moisten the indoor air and are useful for treating colds. If they aren't cleaned properly they may pump bacteria into the air, so it's important to clean them often. The easiest way is to use either vinegar or bleach. Just fill the water tank with a cup of vinegar or bleach and fill the rest with water. Take it outside, plug it in and let it run for an hour. After that simply pour out the remaining liquid and make sure to rinse everything very well. This is the list of things that everyone forgets to clean. Try to memorise this simple steps and don't forget to include them into your cleaning schedule.
