What piece of advice have you received that you will never forget?
When I first began monetizing my business, an experienced blogger told me the importance of keeping everything above board from bank accounts to taxes to disclosure. When the media storm surrounding the FTC recommendations hit the blogging world, I was already doing everything right. This is some of the best advice I ever received.
Can you share what aspect of social media is the most effective for you?
Twitter. And my best piece of advice is to ignore all of the tools and advice and just be yourself. In the end, genuine always wins and people smell fake from a mile away.
What’s the one thing you make sure you do everyday for your blog/business?
The one thing that is a must-do every day simply to keep your head above water is close attention to email. While many of us joke about inboxes that are out of control, the simple fact is that ignored messages may mean missed opportunities, and an overwhelming email inbox can quickly snowball out of control.
What have you learned in the last 12 months that’s been a “game changer” for your blog/business?
About a year ago someone told me that my services are only worth what someone is willing to pay. This advice continues to resonate as I hear so much talk from other bloggers about what they’re worth. It doesn’t matter how much time we spend hashing out the details of what we deserve. If there’s not someone on the other end willing to pay that, it’s pointless. This has absolutely allowed me to focus on what is really important – providing a valuable service for which people ARE willing to pay.
What are your last words of advice?
Don’t get bogged down trying to figure out where all of this is leading. When I began my twitter party business my husband asked me, “How will this help you get where you want to go?” The truth is that I had no idea where it would take me, and where I am now is much farther than where I ever hoped to be. Sometimes you just have to go with it and see where it takes you.
