Many people make simple mistakes that can make a big difference in the way their steak turns out. Don’t worry though, those mistakes are EASILY remedied!
Here are 5 TOP TIPS FOR GRILLING YOUR STEAK. YOU MAY BE GRILLING YOUR STEAK WRONG! Check and see!
CHOOSE THE RIGHT CUT AND QUALITY OF MEAT
Not all meats are created equal, and cut and quality DO make a huge difference in how your grilled steak will turn out. Preference really comes into play in what cut of steak you prefer. Some people really like steaks with more fat content, and some people, no matter what, like a leaner steak. Quality is key.
Meat comes in Choice, Prime and Select, with Choice being the highest quality based on a few categories like marbling, color and maturity. If you are unsure about what kind of steak to grill, talk to your butcher. Remember, grilling a steak isn’t like throwing cheap meat in the slow cooker.
DO SEASON YOUR MEAT
Do not be afraid to season your meat. In fact, top chef’s season their steaks with sea salt and cracked pepper to bring out the flavor and give the steak a nice crust.
The KEY is to season your steak right before (or up to 15 minutes before) you throw it on the grill. If you do it way ahead of time, the salt will draw the juices out of the meat, which of course you do not want.
DO NOT USE A BBQ FORK TO TURN YOUR MEAT
Many people unknowingly stab their steaks with a BBQ fork to turn them. This punctures the steak, releasing the juices, and thus drying out the steak.
So, be sure to use BBQ tongs to turn your steak. It’s nice to have a good BBQ tool set on hand so you don’t have to worry about having the right tool!
ONLY FLIP YOUR STEAK ONCE
You’ll want to use a chart (you can go online to find one) to determine how long to grill your steak so that you don’t ruin it.
You know those grill lines you see on your meat in restaurants?
It’s not from flipping the steak over and over again and checking for doneness. The best practice is to figure out how long your steak should cook and then flip it once.
You should also give it a quarter turn on each side (that’s how those extra grill lines appear).
LET YOUR MEAT REST BEFORE SERVING
Do not cut into your meat to check for wellness. It’ll release the juices and dry it out. Let your steak “rest” for a few minutes before you serve it. This allows the juices to settle, making the steak softer and juicier. Add a dab of butter to the top of your steak to make it even more succulent.
