Wondering how to cook a steak so that it’s juicy and tender? The best steak recipe starts with picking out the right kind of meat. Nicole not only gives us 6 succulent steak recipes to make but also tips on types of steak.
Whether your up for a summertime barbecue or mid-week oven made meal, a steak makes for a great main dish. But, if you’re anything like me, you have limited knowledge on the different cuts making the purchasing process a guessing game. According to a 2006 article in the Washington Post :
“Chuck and Round are tough guys, Rib and Loin are not”
So when purchasing your steak read the package and keep that in mind. The tough cuts need to be slowly cooked and should not be your go-to grilled meat. With this in mind, below are 6 recipes that will enliven your taste buds.
How To Cook A Steak
1.) Flank Steak with Cabrales Cheese and a Warm Garlic, Orange, Sherry Vinaigrette (video tutorial included) Adding Cabrales gives a bite much like blue cheese. The garlic, orange and sherry vinaigrette rounds out the full flavor of this steak dish.
2.) Perfectly Grilled without the Grill Stuck in an apartment or with a freezing cold night, not to worry. No grill? No problem. This recipe shows you how to get that grill taste with a pan and your oven within the comforts of your own home. Enjoy!
3.) Porterhouse with Rosemary Garlic Marinade and Oregano Garlic Butter A Porterhouse is a large cut where the tenderloin and top loin meet. Marinade this hearty cut of meat with a simple blend of rosemary and garlic. Top it off with a compound butter mixture of oregano and garlic to complete this filling meal.

4.) Rib Eye Dry Aged (step-by-step photos) Do you love the taste and flavor of your local steak house? Grab some prime beef from the local butcher and follow these step-by-step instructions for the dry aging process. The end result, steak house taste without having to leave your house.
5.) Steak with Cucumbers and Radish Salsa Liven up your next grilled steak by topping it with this refreshing blend of cucumber, cilantro and radish. If the radish isn’t enough kick, the author suggests some jalapeno. Either way, this Salsa will make an otherwise boring steak lively!
6.) Pan-seared Filet Mignon in a Shallot Wine Sauce One of the more expensive cuts of steak, the tender Filet Mignon is a great meal option for a special celebration. This recipe calls for a shallot-based wine sauce. Shallots are onions but they are of the sweeter variety. A simple but splurge-worthy dish.
Additional tips on picking out the right steak from the Washington Post article {link above}:
- Look for thick cuts of steak.
- Don’t trim the fat on your steak until cooking is complete, this will yield a more flavorful steak.
- Know your grades – If it’s the lowest grade of meat, it will be the toughest. In your regular supermarkets you’ll often find choice and select – choice being the most tender cut of meat. Prime cuts are often found at a local butcher and are the highest in quality and the most tender.
- Enhanced meat includes additives, natural does not, but may include animals who have been given hormones. If you’re looking for the most natural, go for USDA certified Organic. Check the labels for the packaging for this information or ask your butcher what is available based on your preference.
