Melissa with The Inspired Room

Introduce yourself to Tip Junkies.

My name is Melissa and I’m a mom of three and a pastor’s wife at a new church in Washington. On the web, I’m the creator of the blog The Inspired Room! I love having a blog where I can share things I love about decorating and making a home for my family! I like to keep things simple, doable and affordable!

Through The Inspired Room, I emphasize the importance of being authentic and true to who you are, creating a home that feels just as great as it looks, and how to fill your home with meaningful things to make your house truly a home.

What do you think every new blogger/Mom-preneur should know?

Blogging is a fun and rewarding hobby! Turning a blog into a real business is a ton of work. It is like building any other business, it takes effort, determination, sacrifices, focus and dedication towards short and long term goals. But of course, all of that can come at a price. Every day you have to make a decision for how you are going to spend your time. If you have young children at home, finding a balance is going to be difficult, particularly if you do not have household help!

Before you decide to take your blog from a hobby to a business, make sure you are ready for the sacrifices and choices you’ll have to make along the way. It can be done successfully with the right support system and time management skills, but it is definitely something you will want to consider before making the decision to be a blogger/mom-preneur!

With that said, if you love what you do, a lot of the “work” is fun. Being a mom-preneur it is an amazing opportunity to do what you love! I can’t imagine working at any other job than the one I have created for myself! It is a real blessing!

What have you learned in the last 12 months that has been a “game-changer” for your blog/business?

I don’t have time for a time consuming hobby, so while I love decorating and blogging, I have to make the most of my effort. This means I have to work smarter! I try to analyze what I am doing and make sure that it is not only fun for me, like a hobby, but also productive for my family. I am running in a lot of directions so I want to make sure that all the things I chose to do are all contributing to my family’s well being as well as my own personal enjoyment.

What piece of advice have you received that you’ll never forget?

Life: There is a season for everything. Just because something is not right for you today doesn’t mean you cannot look forward to it down the road. You can’t do everything at once, so do everything in the right season.
Favorite quote for business {from Barbara Cook}: “When you are able to be yourself, you will have no competition!”

What part of your blog/business are you most passionate about right now? Why?

I’m passionate about growing and evolving my business while keeping my life balanced. I love what I do and want to make sure that I continue to grow and expand the possibilities and viability of my business. I want my blog to be a part of my life for years to come. I am passionate about keeping life balanced so that I don’t become yet another blog that burned out. I’m in this for the long haul so I need to have a long term vision that fits with my day to day life right now, so I stay in love with what I do!

Who do you look up to? Why?

I look forward to other amazing blogging women, like Laurie, who are passionate, positive about what they do online, and yet they still keep their families happy, healthy and together! They are my online heroes!

Last words of advice?

I try to remind myself that building a successful blog is a marathon, not a sprint! That helps me to pace myself and keep things in perspective! I hope it is advice that will help you too!

Melissa’s favorite posts:

In addition for the love I have for sharing my own home and ideas, I also love sharing the talent of others and building them up for all of their creative talent and hard work. I just started two new ways I can show off the ideas I find online, one is through my DIY page and the other is through my Room Tours. You can find these new pages on my blog! I’m really excited about these pages and hope to expand the pages and their usefulness to my readers over time!
