Step by Step Instructions

  • Step 1

    1. Stand Up Paddle Boarding

This is a newer sport, also called “stand up paddle surfing”, and it’s a fantastic way to get a workout on the water – and you don’t have to wait for the perfect wave!

Boards for beginners are a bit longer and wider than regular surfboards, so it’s easier to balance on them. You’ll get a killer workout on your legs and core muscles, and even more so when you add in the paddling!

  • Step 2

    2. Open Water Swimming

Why on earth would you want to spend your time at the public pool, trying to swim laps around hoards of screaming children?

Instead, head for the nearest lake, ocean or river and start swimming. You’ll burn just as many (if not more) calories, but there’s no chlorine smell and plenty of room – and no screaming kids!

  • Step 3

    3. Tai Chi

Tai Chi is a form of martial arts that originally developed in China as a form of self defense. However, it’s now used more as a type of moving meditation, quite similar to yoga.

Studies have shown that it helps reduce stress and depression, reduce body aches and pains, and improve balance and coordination. Like yoga, it burns about 100 calories per hour.

  • Step 4

    4. Rock Climbing

Rock climbing in an amazing full body exercise, offering resistance training that builds muscles and endurance. It burns as much as 748 calories per hour.

  • Step 5

    5. Surfing

Head to the beach and hit the waves in this exercise that will work out every muscle in your body! Tones muscles and arms while you paddle out, strengthen your core as you balance, and really work your thighs and calves as you stand on a moving surfboard. Needless to say, it’s also an excellent cardio workout that can burn fat in the same way that interval training does.
