A friend of mine asked me to help create a gift for Valentine’s Day that wasn’t some “mushy pink and red thing” so I designed this Sweetheart State Map. I love how it turned out and how it has a “chalk board” look to it. They were from two towns in Idaho but if you wanted to create one with two different states that would be easy too. Instead of paint you could use white yarn to connect the states. If you both were from the same town you could use it to represent your hometown and new location.

You Will Need...
- Wood State Shape, Mine is 18″ tall by 1/2″ thick

- 2 Wood Star Shapes. 1″ tall by 1/8″ thick
- White & Black craft paint
- Craft glue
- Foam paint brush
- Fine & medium bristle paint brushes
- Pencil

Step by Step Instructions
Step 1
Paint the State: Use the black paint & foam brush to coat the face and sides of the state. This may take two coats to get consistent coverage.
Step 2
Paint the Stars & Letters: Use the white paint and mid-size paint brush to paint the front and sides of the stars and letters. Set aside to dry.
Step 3
Sketch the Dotted Line: Use the pencil to sketch the location of the dotted line.
Step 4
Paint the Dotted Line: Use the white paint and fine tipped brush to paint in the dotted line.
Step 5
Fix Your Mistakes: I don’t have the most steady hand so there were a few places that I went back over and touched up with the black paint.
Step 6
Apply the Glue: Apply the craft glue to the back of the letters and stars.
Step 7
Affix the Letters & Stars: Carefully place the letters and stars onto the state plaque. Wipe away any excess glue.
Step 8
Here is How it Looks: Here is how mine is looking up close.
Step 9
Done! Gift, display and enjoy!
