Step by Step Instructions
Step 1
Using the pattern, cut out five feathers from the felt in various colors. Cut a piece of wire 18″ long.
Step 2
About 2″ from one end, bend the wire down over itself. Twist it a few times to make a loop. Stack three feathers, then lay the wire in the center with the loop just above the top.
Step 3
Add the remaining two feathers on top of the wire. Pin to hold the wire in place. Using a zigzag stitch on a sewing machine, carefully stitch down the center over the wire. If you’re uncomfortable with a sewing machine or are concerned about hitting the wire with the needle, you can sew it by hand.
Step 4
Starting at the top, cut slits at angle all the way down the side. Each cut should be about 1/4 to 3/8″ apart. Be sure not to cut all the way to the wire in the center.
Step 5
Repeat down the opposite side. Pick the feather up and shake it to fluff the layers apart a bit.
Step 6
Using needle nosed pliers, curve the remaining wire at the bottom into a swirl. Another option would be to curl it around a pencil.
Step 7
Once the feather is complete, you can leave the wire straight, give it a slight curve or give it more of an S shape. All that’s left is to hang them on the tree!
