Very few household fixtures are as useful as kitchen sinks. In fact, for any kitchen to serve well it must have a functional sink. However, after many years of use, sinks can become stained, outdated, and even start to leak.

It is, therefore, important to replace the sink in order to solve this problem. However, before replacing a kitchen sink you must remove the old one. Although it’s not easy to fix a new sink without interfering with the counter top, with average skills you can complete the process within a very short time. Here is how to replace a kitchen sink.

Step by Step Instructions

  • Step 1

Analyze the kind of sink and empty the cabinet

Typically, kitchen sinks come in two major designs namely the drop-in sinks and the under-mounted ones. After knowing the type of sink you have, clear everything from the cabinet so as to give you room to move around and more space to place your tools.

  • Step 2

    Remove the sink

Using a utility knife, slice through the sealant along the edges of the fixture. However, be careful not to cut the counter top especially if you are still going to use it. After doing this, remove the sink from the counter top. You can do this by unscrewing the metal clips that connect the sink to the countertop. Remember, removing these screws might take some time hence you need to be patient. Once you are through with the screws, pull out the sink. In fact, drop-in sinks are often very easy to remove. But, while doing this be extra careful not to damage the counter top or the remaining piping. Finally, clean the surface well before you can start installing a new sink.

  • Step 3

    Make final inspection

Finally, check if there are any leaks by turning on the pipe and allowing water to run for several minutes.
