If you are interested in a contemporary entrance door for your home, you might also be interested in some of the current trends. Whilst some people aren’t concerned with following what’s “in” and what’s not, knowing the current trends will give you an idea of the designs you are likely to come across when making your purchase. In this article, we have outlined some of the more prevalent of these trends to help you with your new front door design.
▪ Minimalism
This should come as no surprise, as minimalism goes hand in hand with contemporary design. You will be looking at doors that offer clean lines and very little in the way of ornamentation. Instead, the beauty of these designs lies in the simplicity – opt for stunning timbers (light colours or stains are distinctly modern) and streamlined materials that don’t draw the eye to one particular element over another.
▪ Cubed, Translucent Glass
Horizontal or cubed glass apertures are becoming incredibly common in these designs, as they add interest without the whole door becoming too ornate. Translucent or slumped (free form patterned) glass is also popular, as it lets in plenty of light whilst offering privacy. Colourless glass avoids too much complexity. The large range of glass inserts available also means that there is more scope to create an exact effect.
▪ Pivot Doors
Many homeowners are opting for pivot contemporary entrance doors, which are wider than standard ones (up to 1200mm) and are supported by commercial grade hardware. They are believed to add a sense of grandeur to the space and make guests feel undeniably welcome. A combination of timber and metal inserts is also quite popular. This reflects a distinct European style and is ultra-contemporary.
▪ Exaggerated hardware
Whilst the rest of the design is quite minimal, the hardware (particularly door handles) are becoming quite exaggerated. Look for oversize handles – some even extend from top to bottom – and visible hinges. Stainless steel is also becoming the material of choice for contemporary hardware, as it offers a lovely sheen and invokes a modern appearance. Other metals can also be used to achieve a similar look.
▪ Security
Less is more when it comes to contemporary security. Many homeowners are choosing single-sheet mesh (normally stainless steel), as it won’t compete with the overall design of the door. Others are choosing to set the mesh into a solid wood frame so that it looks somewhat similar to the entrance door behind. Many still are loathe to install any sort of security panel, as they feel it detracts from the appearance.
When it comes to contemporary entrance doors, it is important that you are aware of current trends, as you are unlikely to find alternative products on the market (unless you’re willing to look hard for them). We hope that the above points have provided you with some idea of what to expect and that they enable you to design a door that meets your aesthetic and functional needs. What trends do you believe are going to boom in the future?
