Did you all hear that Picnik is closing down in April? Lots of people are freaking out, but not to fear, I’m here to help! {{snicker}} I’ve done some research and want to share with you how to use the Creative Kit on Google+, which is the Picnik replacement. Hopefully with this help the transition to a new platform will be a lot easier than you anticipated!
In case you haven’t heard, here’s the skinny:
- Picnik, the online image editing service, has announced it will be closing the site on April 19, 2012.
- Users of the premium service will get a full refund of the $24.95!
- Many of the photo-editing features that could be found in Picnik can now be used in Google+ through its Creative Kit.
How to use Google+ Creative Kit {step by step instructions}
First of all, Google+ creative kit is the replacement for Picnik and is a quick way to do creative edits to your photos within Google+. The nice thing is that it’s all done with your browser so you don’t need to download and install software.
- Login into Google+. {be sure to Follow Tip Junkie on G+!}
- Click on the Photos tab, click on Your Albums in the left, then click on a Album on the right.
- {You can’t “login” directly to it, you have to upload images to Google+ if you haven’t already and then edit them from there.}
- Click on a photo that you want to edit.
- In the upper left of the photo, click on the “Creative Kit” tab. Creative Kit will load.
- Suddenly it’ll look an awful lot like Picnik {wink}
- If you look at the left side, youll find all the options and features that you can add to your photos. {exposure, crop, sharpen, etc}
- Click on a effect that you are interested in. Itll show all the detailed effects that you can apply under a particular effect.
- Double click or drag the item you’d like to your photo (if you are adding an item) and place it wherever you want it.
- Once you are done with all your effects, click on the save button. Itll provide you options to overwrite this photo or save it under a different name
How to Login to use Creative Kit:
- Login into Google+. (I usually login to gmail and then click on my Google+ icon).
- Click on the Photos button {at top}.
- Follow instructions above.
** Important!! Once the site closes, any images stored on Picnik will not be available, so users are advised to transfer or download any images before April 19. Picnik “Takeout” will easily download photos to your desktop in zip files, while photos can also be transferred across to Google+. Takeout can be used as many times as necessary until April 19.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Creative Kit does collages. In my research I haven’t found a platform that is intuitive and easy to use as Picnik for collages, but these look close.
