After finding a pretty ceramic fish planter, I wanted to add some herbs but make it so that it would be easy for the gift recipient to replace them when the time came. Adding small clay pots, colored gravel and glass vase fillers added a practical, decorative touch

You Will Need...
- large ceramic planter
- smaller clay pots
- herbs
- lightweight potting soil
- vermiculite or perlite
- glass stones or marbles
- colored gravel
- colored aquarium or terrarium sand
- ribbon for bow
Step by Step Instructions
Step 1
select small clay pots that will fit inside your ceramic planter and plant with flowers or herbs
Step 2
fill the bottom of the ceramic planter with perlite or vermiculite so it won’t be too heavy. (Tip: I first tried packing peanuts but they melted when I added water.) Then nestle your clay pots into the perlite. Add glass vase filler stones or marbles around the pots to hold them in place. I also added some colored aquarium sand inside the clay pots for gift presentation. Then just tie on a bow and you’re set.
Step 3
If you want to add an element of surprise, put your planter in an oversized gift bag. I made one out of an old cotton sheet. I just cut the sheet to size, stitched up the sides and added a rope drawstring inside a hem at the top. Then I drew some funny fishes with fabric markers as it was a plain sheet.
